Municipal Castle "Castillo de Luna"

simbolos 3

It dates back to the 13th century and it was built on an Arab fortified convent from the 11th century. It has a rectangular plant and five battlemented towers. The Ponce de León family used the castle as their place of residence and the Catholic Monarchs, who visited the town, also stayed at it. The castle is the symbol of the town and consequently it appears on its coat of arms. Later, this castle has been used as a hospital and as a school but nowadays it is the seat of Rota’s Town Hall and its Tourist Office. There are some guided tours at weekends.
